How to Bid The American Quarter Horse Association is committed to the promotion of the ranch horse. There are programs to help ranchers to market their ranch-bred American Quarter Horses and opportunities for ranch-bred horses to be showcased in competition. Ranching Heritage Breeders Program Ranching Heritage Breeders are AQHA member-owned ranches and individuals who represent longevity, honesty and integrity in raising quality American Quarter Horses and uphold ranching heritage traditions. Ranching Heritage Breeders must breed and register at least five American Quarter Horse foals each year and must maintain a remuda of horses used to operate a working cattle operation. The ranch also must have received an AQHA 10year breeder award to be eligible for the program. The horses that come from Ranching Heritage Breeders uphold the tradition and heritage of the working cattle ranch and when horses are purchased from a Ranching Heritage Breeder, that great tradition continues. Ranching Heritage challenges An exclusive opportunity for Ranching Heritage bredhorses, Ranching Heritage Challenge events showcase ranchbred American Quarter horses. The Challenges offer multiple divisions for various ages and skill levels for both horse and rider. Classes include working ranch horse, ranch riding, team roping and barrel racing. To be eligible, horses must have been bred by a Ranching Heritage Breeder, plus all payments – weanling, yearling, 2-year-old and 3-year-old – must be complete in order to compete. Those payments also generate the purses for Ranching Heritage Challenge events. There will be a AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenge Finals held in conjunction with the 2026 AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse World Championships. For more information about AQHA’s ranching programs, including a list of Ranching Heritage Breeders, an application to become a Ranching Heritage Breeder and Ranching Heritage Challenge information, visit aqha.com/ranching.

Located in the Sandhills of Nebraska, the Haythorn Land & Cattle Co. claims a unique and colorful history. Founder Harry Haythornthwaite was a lovelorn 16-year-old from England who, after being discovered as a stowaway, was put to work tending white-faced bulls being shipped to Galveston, Texas. For eight years, Harry, worked as a cowhand making trail drives to Kansas and Nebraska and was drawn to the vastness of the Great Plains, deciding to stay. He opened a livery barn, shortened his name to Haythorn and married Emma Gilpin. In 1884, Harry filed a land grant to begin the Haythorn Ranches, which spread over two counties, and purchased 500 head of horses trailing them back to Nebraska from Baker, Oregon. In the 1940s, Harry’s son, Walt, purchased “Sport” the first registered quarter horse in Nebraska, who went on to produce exceptional mares. Haythorn crossed these mares with the original “Eddie” with great success and since the ranch received the inaugural Best of the Remuda by AQHA in 1992, has added bloodlines that include PlayGun, Metallic Cat and Haidas Little Pep. Present day manager, Craig Haythorn, a 4th generation of Haythorns manages this historic ranch with his wife Jody, as well as 5th generation sons, Sage, his wife Kelley, and children Steel & Stoli along with Cord and his wife, Katie, and children Haven & Conley. They strive to preserve cowboy traditions and integrity in an ever-changing and increasingly challenging industry. 4 Lots 101-102 Haytho Land & Ca co. Haythorn Ranch Company is located in the Sandhills of Nebraska, along the Platte River Valley near Maxwell. It is comprised of 20,000 acres of grass, meadow hay, and sweet water from the Ogallala Aquifer. We are primarily a cow/calf operation running up to 1,500 mother cows. The Haythorns have been ranching in the Nebraska Sandhills since 1884. Harry Haythornthwaite (later shortened to Haythorn) stowed away on a ship bound for the U.S.A. at the age of 16, and when found he was put to work caring for the Hereford bulls that were on board. Docking in Galveston, Texas, he went to work for the rancher who owned the bulls. He later made four cattle drives on the Western Trail, two of which passed through Ogallala, Nebraska. Harry spent his wages on a livery stable in Ogallala where he met and married Emma Gilpin. Harry and Emma filed on a homestead in 1884, thus beginning the long legacy of Haythorn Ranches. The Haythorns have been breeding American Quarter Horses since before the registry’s inception in 1940. We pasture breed 15 to 25 mares a year and run about 20 to 40 saddle horses in our remuda. Our horses are bred for use on the ranch, not to follow the whims of the market. They must have good bones and feet, plenty of muscle, a kind disposition, and lots of cow sense. All of this translates into versatile horses that can be used by a wide variety of people for anything that can be done on horseback. All of us at Haythorn Ranch are proud of our work and proud of our industry. Cowboys and horses have been part of the Haythorn legacy for more than 130 years and will continue to be for generations to come. Haythorn Ranch is entering the sixth generation of traditional ranching. 6 Lots 103-106 Haytho Ranch Company Howard Haythorn, Harry & Londa Haythorn 25500 E. 10 Lots 107-115 Mushoe Ranch John Anderson P.o. Box 134, Gail, Texas 79738 • 806-759-5019 W.D. Johnson Sr. started the Muleshoe brand when he bought the Blackwater division of the XIT Ranch on the Blackwater Draw around 1900. The Santa Fe Railroad built a road from Lubbock to Clovis, N.M., which ran through the middle of the ranch known as the Muleshoe Ranch. By that time, Mr. Johnson had sold the ranch to E.K. Warren and son from Three Oaks, Michigan. Warren gave one section for a town-site when the railroad was built. This town was named Muleshoe and still goes by that name. When Mr. Johnson sold the ranch, he maintained the Muleshoe brand. Around 1908, Mr. Johnson and Mr. R.M. Clayton formed a partnership, the Clayton and Johnson Co., and bought a ranch in Borden County in 1913, continuing to use the Muleshoe brand. What is now the Muleshoe Ranch was originally open grazing and used by the Magnolia Land and Cattle Co. prior to 1894. In 1945, Mr. Jerry Clayton, one of R.M. Clayton’s sons, bought the Muleshoe Ranch from another son, A.M. Clayton. In 1957, Jerry Clayton sold the ranch to his daughters, Jere Hubbard and Barbara Anderson. In 1994, Rich and Barbara became the sole owners of the ranch. John Anderson and his wife, Kevva, live on the ranch. Their three children were also raised on the ranch. Clay John and his wife, Krista, live on the ranch and help run it as well. The youngest daughter, Bailey Halverson, and her husband, Jake, help with the working ranch program also. Whitney Fuston and her husband, Kye, carry on the family heritage by also working in the ranching industry.

The historic O RO Ranch, best known by its O RO brand, is located in northern Arizona about 50 miles northwest of Prescott. The cattle are branded O RO and the horses RO. Cowboys usually refer to the outfit as the “ROs.” The ranch contains the 100,000-acre Baca Float No. 5, as well as an additional 157,000 acres on the west side. The JJJ Corp. has owned the ranch since 1973. Neither the land nor the remote O RO have changed much in the past century and a quarter. It’s still some of the roughest and most untamed land in the Southwest, with elevations running from 4,000 to 7,500 feet. The ranch is divided into five year-round cow camps. Cowboys throughout the West consider it the top ranch of its size. In the early years, it was truly a “horseback ranch” in that all the work was done from the back of a horse. All the supplies had to be hauled in by freight wagon and pack mules. Its mule-drawn chuck wagon was one of the last in Arizona. Jane Droppa, who owns the ROs along with her family, shares the philosophy of maintaining tradition while staying current with modern trends. Her dedication to raising beef while preserving the rugged, horseback nature of the job makes for a unique outfit, and cowboys recognize and appreciate the opportunity to work at the ROs. 14 Lot 116 O Ranch Jed Roark 30350 W. The Spade Ranch legacy began more than 120 years ago, in 1889, when DeKalb, Illinois, natives Col. Isaac Ellwood and his son, W.L. Ellwood, made a simple business trip to West Texas. In 1874, Ellwood became one of the original patent holders of barbed wire when he and his neighbor developed an economical way to keep livestock out of the area’s many farms. The invention quickly changed the Midwest farmland, but the Ellwoods saw a flourishing market in the vast expanses of the West Texas plains. Among the ranchers the Ellwoods met in West Texas were the Snyder brothers. The brothers must have been shrewd businessmen themselves because not only did they resist Ellwood’s sales pitch, they convinced him to buy their 130,000-acre ranch. By the 1960s, the Spade Ranches began a planned crossbreeding program in the cow-calf operation that continues today, although adjusting with changing market demand. Today, the ranches use composite bulls (Simm/Angus and Balancer) crossing the heifers from one mating to the other composite. This maintains a high level of heterosis while producing a uniform calf crop, a stable breed composition and eliminating the need to buy replacement heifers from other sources. Today’s horse breeding program crosses the daughters of their own son of Dual Rey with their son of High Brow Cat and vice versa. The objective is to use unrelated bloodlines to produce functional ranch horses with lots of cow sense and bottom. The Spade Ranches today consist of seven outfits: the original Renderbrook Spade in Mitchell, Sterling and Coke counties; Borden Spade in Borden County; North Spade in Motley and Hall counties; Panhandle Spade in Roberts and Hemphill counties; Alpine Spade in Brewster and Presidio counties; Slaughter Spade in Garza County; and Mendota Spade in Hemphill County, totaling about 300,000 acres. Wesley Welch is the president and CEO of Spade Ranches, and the board of directors includes five great-great-grandchildren of Isaac Ellwood along with outside directors. 16 Lots 117-119 Spade nches, ltd. W.T. Waggoner Estate, Inc., was started in 1849 by Dan Waggoner. Dan began buying land in western Wise County in 1870. In 1873, Dan and his 21-year-old son, W.T. (Tom), drove a herd of cattle to market in Kansas and returned with $55,000. This was considered to be a fortune at that time. It was seed money to start an empire. As the land was cleared for settlement, they gradually moved to the west, buying grasslands, having holdings in six counties. Dan passed away in 1902, and W.T. Waggoner continued to expand and operate his ranching interests until 1923, when he formed what is known today as the W.T. Waggoner Estate. The W.T. Waggoner Estate stretches into six counties, with headquarters in Vernon, Texas. Main interests of the company are ranching, oil and approximately 26,000 acres in cultivation. The horses are bred for working ranch purposes and many still carry the bloodline of the famous Quarter Horse Poco Bueno. Descendants of Dan Waggoner sold the sprawling ranch to Kroenke Ranches in February of 2016. Kroenke Ranches now owns ranches in Canada and the U.S. The main office for the ranch is located in Vernon, Texas. The headquarters for the ranch, known as Zacaweista, is located 13 miles south of Vernon. The ranch consists of approximately 525,000 contiguous acres, which makes it the largest ranch in the nation under one fence. It employs approximately 96 people, ranging from cowboys, farm hands, oil field workers to office staff. Ranch management constantly strives to implement proven modern techniques into the operation, making the W.T. Waggoner Estate, Inc., one of the largest cow/calf enterprises in the country. 18 Trace Cribbs P.O.
